Rylee

I was cold, scared, alone and hungry as I wandered the streets of Columbus when I was hit by a car. When I woke up the pain was so bad that I could barely walk. Every step I tried to take would hurt so much that I just wanted to give up.  Now on top of starving, being cold and alone, I was in extreme pain with a broken left rear leg.  One of my bones made a big gash when it came through my skin and, in the week before I was picked up, it got badly infected.  Yes, I roamed the streets for a week with only the skin, veins and tendons keeping my foot attached and the bone sticking out before I finally made it to the Animal Shelter. The shelter called Harlequin Haven to help me and they agreed to take me in. HHGDR sent a very nice lady to drive me to the Vet and to meet my new Grandma. I am no longer scared, cold or hungry and for the first time in my life I know what the word love means!

When I arrived at All Creatures Animal Hospital they took x-rays of my leg. Rylee The vet said that I cannot have surgery till the massive infection (my paw is about 5 times the size it should be) is gone and I gain a few pounds. Then they will decide if it can be fixed or if they have to amputate my leg.  I now have a warm soft bed and plenty of food, I weigh 84 pounds and I should be about 120 pounds. Grandma is cleaning and dressing my leg with medication to get rid of the infection. She says it appears to be working so I get to go to the orthopedic surgeon and hopefully have my leg fixed next week. It scares me when I hear everyone talk about how much it will cost. I don't understand how much $3,000 is but I see their worried faces. If you understand how much that is, can you help Grandma? I don’t want to be a burden on the rescue and Grandma, but she told me not to worry about it - just to worry about getting well.  She told me that I wasn’t the first dog that the rescue family has rallied around, and she was sure we’d find the money somewhere.  I know it’s almost Christmas and I know many people have already gone out of their way to help me. So for Christmas I’m going to do my very best to get well enough for the operation and hope Santa will bring me enough strength and luck that I’ll be able to keep my leg.  I’ll keep you updated, too, because Grandma tells me that without our rescue family helping and praying for us, we wouldn’t be able to survive.

My new name is Rylee which means courageous, and I am trying very hard to be just that!! Although I am in a lot of pain, I have not growled or snapped at anyone. I have just given them kisses thanking them for caring!

Update December 2: It appears that the medical care I am receiving and being fed is working! With each bandage change everyone comments that the skin and tissue is looking better plus I have already gained 5 pounds.
Update December 4: My leg continues to improve, although my paw is still swollen it has went down a lot!! I got on the scale again today and I have gained 9 pounds since I arrived at the rescue!! I am trying my best to be well enough to have surgery next week!
Update December 6:
Well my leg continues to improve and my paw is still swollen but not as bad as 2 days ago. Grandma and I are just getting really anxious waiting for Tuesday AM so I can go see the Orthopedic surgeon!! We both are praying that there is no infection and that he can save my leg. I do want to thank all of you that have sent your prayers and good wishes you do not know how much that means to me right now! I also want to thank all that have donated towards my surgery I now have $360, I realize times are difficult right now and I want you to know that I greatly appreciate every penny!!
Update December 7: In 13 hours I have my appointment with the orthopedic surgeon, please keep me in your thoughts and prayers. If all goes well Grandma will give you and update tomorrow afternoon. So far we have $657 towards my surgery, thank you all to have donated it is greatly appreciated!
Update December 8: Well this day did not turn out like my Grandma and many of you wanted but I am okay with it and am happy to no longer be in pain. Yes, you guessed it my leg was amputated this morning. The Orthopedic surgeon said there was nothing that could be done to save my leg. He explained to Grandma that I was most probably ran over by a car at least a month or 2 ago. Please don't feel sorry for me I am already walking around and happy that I am loved and being cared for. Yes you read that correctly I am already walking!! Well I am tired it was a long day, but I promise to have Grandma take pictures of me later today or tomorrow, as soon as she is up to it!
Update December 9: Okay not quite the pictures (see pics below) I had planned on having Grandma take but I am a Dane and I will melt if I get wet and it won't stop raining!!! I will be getting the IV catheter taken out later today they want it in for 24 hours post surgery just encase I would need it. Now to work on getting healed and gaining the rest of the weight I need to gain!!!
Update December 13: Is it ever going to stop raining???? How is a kid suppose to get outside and play if it doesn't stop raining?  Well I will give you a quick update, I am doing great other then being bored! I have a very good friend her name is Jacie. She wants to play with me as much as I want to play with her but the weather just will not give us a break! I should not complain because just a few weeks ago I was living on the streets and having to endure this crappy weather and the pain and wondering where my next meal would come from! Now I have people that love me and a friend. Life is really pretty good!!
Update December 15: Well Jacie and I had our playtime outside yesterday but I must say it was not what I had hoped for! It has rained so much lately the yard was nothing but mud!! So we were not able to play as we had hoped. After a few trips around the yard we decided to go inside and play with our toys!! Below are pics of us outside.
Update December 24: Sorry I have not updated you in so long I have been busy playing and enjoying life! I have gained most of my weight and now only eat 3 meals each day along with as many treats and I am able to talk humans out of!!! Grandma said that if I keep this up I will be available for adoption when the rescue reopens in January! My stitches were removed and I am all healed from my surgery. I also attended Grooming day here at the rescue last Sunday and it was great!! I got tons of loving and brushing and I totally enjoyed the extra attention. I am really excited because tomorrow Santa comes and Grandma told me that I have been extra good and should expect Santa to be very good to me!!! I can't wait!!! Although Santa and everyone have already been really great to me I really would like some more new toys!!
Update December 31: Santa was wonderful to me I received many new toys and wonderful Christmas cookies! Grandma says I am a Princess because I now only want Christmas cookies! I continue to gain weight and hopefully will gain enough to be available shortly after the New Year!
Update January 17: Well I have gained all my weight and am a beautiful, gentle and loving Dane! Yes Grandma still calls me a Princess and she is right! After all I have been through I deserve to be a princess! I will have Grandma take new pictures of me soon so you can see how beautiful I am! I am ready to find my forever home now! I want a home with tons of love and a big soft couch for me to lay on!!
Update February 20: I finally got Grandma to take new pictures of me!! Check them out below!!!

Update March 28: I was watching Grandma take care of Nadia the other day and I asked her if I could help. Grandma said that Nadia needed a mentor so she could learn how to be a great Great Dane and she told me she could not think of a better Dane to help her grow up into a well mannered dog! I was thrilled!! Below is a picture of me teaching Nadia how to stay in one place for more then 30 seconds and one of her asking if it was time to go play!

Please can you spare a few dollars to help the Rescue continue to help me and other Danes like me? It would be greatly  appreciated. Without the Rescue who knows where we would have ended up!!
Thanks, Rylee
